A tanker truck has crashed into a kindergarten north of Melbourne leaving a child seriously injured and an adult dead.

The vehicle, believed to be a water tanker, smashed into the Macedon Ranges Montessori Preschool at Riddells Creek at 2.30pm on Monday.

A child has been taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and an adult has been confirmed dead following the collision.

The adult is yet to be formally identified. 

‘Emergency Services are currently in Riddells Creek following a collision. It’s believed at this early stage a truck collided with a kindergarten on Main Road around 2.20pm,’ a Victoria Police spokesman said. 

‘The driver of the truck has also been taken to hospital for observation. The exact circumstances are being investigated.’

The vehicle is believed to have hit a power pole on Main Road before it drove into the playground area of the kindergarten.

Police, firefighters and paramedics remain on scene.

Locals reported hearing the chilling sound of fire alarms from the nearby fire station just after 2.20pm. Images show the truck’s trailer resting firmly within the pre-school grounds.

Parents are being held outside due to fallen powerlines, while the children have been kept indoors for their own safety.

An air ambulance has attended the scene, with paramedics seen working on the injured.

Roads have been closed in all directions around the school.
