The nor’easter storm expected to ravage through the Northeast has already forced five major airlines to issue bleak notices to travelers.

Millions across the Northeast from North Carolina to Maine will likely see their travel disrupted by the dangerous conditions caused by the nor’easter.

American Airlines issued a travel alert for severe weather in the Northeast, extending passengers the chance to rebook at no extra cost if they were flying to, through or from 16 different airports in the region.

That included the three New York area airports in JFK, LaGuardia and Newark, as well as other destinations from Maryland to Virginia.

JetBlue also said it was offering a fee waiver as a result of the raging nor’easter for flights from Friday through Sunday. Their offer covered flights from 11 airports in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island.

Delta said that travel in the northeastern US could be affected due to the weather, while specifically noting the ‘severe’ conditions in Boston.

United Airlines also issued an advisory covering the 10 airports across Nantucket, Hartford, Boston, Newark, New York, Manchester, Philadelphia, Providence and Portland.

Lastly, Southwest published a travel advisory for seven airports as the dangerous storm continued setting in.

In New York, the National Weather Service (NWS) said Friday that ‘strong winds’ could endure for 36 hours. The most powerful gusts were expected late Friday into early Saturday night.

Airport disruptions were already plentiful as a result. Six hundred and sixty-one delays were reported on Friday at LaGuardia, as well as 33 cancelations, per FlightAware.

JFK Airport reported 411 delays and nine cancelations, while Newark saw 191 delays and four cancelations.

LaGuardia and JFK saw ground delays around 2pm local time because of winds, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said the state was ‘preparing for the worst’ ahead of the nor’easter and pleaded for locals to ‘take this storm seriously.’

Hochul said that ‘dangerous’ coastal flooding was projected, as well as powerful winds and likely power outages through the weekend.

The worst flooding was expected to happen along the south shore of Long Island, as well as parts of lower New York Harbor.

Coastal areas of the Bronx, Westchester and northern Nassau County along the Long Island Sound could also be affected by the inclement conditions.

Boston Logan International Airport was also hit with 219 delays and 78 cancelations on Friday.

The NWS in Boston said it was concerned about power outages and downed tree branches.

The rain in the area could last through Monday, likely forcing more travel disruptions until then.

Philadelphia International Airport was also affected with 131 delays and three cancelations, according to FlightAware.

Winds and rain are expected to batter the area during both weekend days. High tides are likeliest to form Saturday morning or night.

That could potentially cause flooding on roads situated in coastal and bayside areas.

Some roadways are expected to become impassable, according to the NWS in the Philadelphia area.

Going up north in Connecticut, Bradley International Airport also saw 31 delays, albeit no cancelations.

Rain is expected to pour throughout the day, with winds up to 60 miles per hour in some areas.

In North Carolina, considerable damage has already been reported along the Outer Banks as a result of the nor’easter.

A nor’easter is a strong storm that forms along the US East Coast. It is named for the northeast winds that blow over the Mid-Atlantic and New England when a low-pressure system sits over the ocean.

This weekend’s storm is expected to keep moving up the east coast, with impacts as far as Maine projected as a result.
