Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has once again criticised VAR following a controversial decision in his team’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea on April 3, 2025.

During the match, Spurs midfielder Pape Matar Sarr seemingly equalised with a powerful shot from outside the box, only for the goal to be disallowed after a lengthy VAR check for a foul on Chelsea’s Moisés Caicedo in the buildup.

Postecoglou did not hide his frustration with the use of VAR in the Premier League, stating, “What is the point of having a referee then? Clear and obvious means the referee should see it straight away. But they stood around for so long. Soon, AI will referee the game, and we won’t even need players anymore. Someone will find a way to have a football game with no people because referees aren’t making decisions.”

This situation has prompted a call for football authorities to closely examine the refereeing process and ensure that officials are held to the highest standards of integrity.

There are also concerns about the potential implications for matches affected by the actions of the VAR official, particularly if it is determined that the official was influenced by betting interests.

Additionally, there were claims that Postecoglou’s reaction to the boos from home fans after the disallowed goal was misunderstood.

As the investigation continues, the football community eagerly awaits the outcome, hoping for justice and the preservation of the integrity of the beautiful game.
