Romanian-born, Swiss-based Gabriela Timar held off the constant pressure of Japan’s Marina Loreto to capture the vacant WBO Atomweight (102 lbs) title in Berne, Switzerland on Friday, Boxing Day. The taller Southpaw Timar, used plenty of lateral movement to try and avoid Loreto’s attacks, while launching her own counters. Loreto landed a smashing right in the sixth, leaving Timar’s face a bloody mess for the remainder of the fight. The pain was so obvious, Timar actually glanced to referee Diana Drews Milani and held her glove up to her face, as if to signal she was hurt. Loreto couldn’t capitalize though. It looked as if Loreto was hurt at the outset of the tenth and final round, as she staggered back from a Timar left. In fact, Timar had stepped on Loreto’s left foot with her own right, preventing Loreto from moving backward to avoid the punch. There were no knockdowns as the bout went the full ten rounds. The final scores read 95-95, 97-93 and 98-92, for Timar by majority decision. Loreto’s husband, former IBO light flyweight champ, was in disbelief and tried to encourage the crowd that his fighter and wife, was the true winner. Timar improves to 16-2, 3 KOs, while Loreto losses for the first time, 8-1-2.
