Ghanaian music icon TiC, known in private life as Nana Kweku Okyere Duah, has been honoured for his pivotal contribution to what Afrobeats is today.

TiC is credited for significant contributions to the evolution and international popularisation of Afrobeats, his international collaborations, gracing of big festival stages, and global television appearances.

The citation presented by Accra FM’s host of Highlife Time, Oyoko Dehyie Kofi, to TiC read: “You have been a trailblazer whose creative artistry and dedication helped lay the foundation for the evolution of Afrobeats and the modern Ghanaian music industry.”

“You have inspired generations of artistes and elevated Ghana’s music to international acclaim,” it further added.

“This honour is bestowed upon you for your outstanding achievements, influence, and pioneering role in shaping the Afrobeats sound and culture,” the citation concluded.

TiC expressed his appreciation for the honour and thanked everyone who contributed to his journey, adding that the gesture meant a lot to him.

Due to his instrumental role in what Afrobeats is today, he was featured in the 2021 Netflix documentary series Afrobeats: The Backstory.

The documentary, directed by Ayo Shonaiya, explores the origins and evolution of the Afrobeats genre, primarily focusing on the contributions of Nigerian and Ghanaian artistes and producers.

TiC appears in Episode 2: “1999 & The 5 Beat Pattern,” which specifically discusses the emergence of “Hip-Life” in Ghana and the development of the distinctive rhythmic patterns that helped shape the modern Afrobeats sound.
