A group of women who drunkenly punched and kicked a stranger in the head before blinding her have been jailed.

Sisters Toni Lee Patterson, 32, Ellie Patterson, 20, Abbie Patterson, 19, and their friend Tania Louise Scott, 35, attacked a woman unprovoked on a boozy night out.

The women became aggressive towards the doormen when they were refused entry to a bar in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.

They then approached the victim, a woman in her 50s, who had just bought food from a nearby takeaway on October 28, 2023, a court heard.

Ellie was the first to attack the victim, who was a stranger, she punched her in the face, grabbed her hair and dragged her across the pavement.

Toni then joined in on the unprovoked ambush.

She grabbed the victim’s hair and alongside Ellie dragged her towards the road, where the victim fell into the carriageway as a friend tried to protect her.

The victim, who was already blind in her left eye, was lying on the road unable to move while Ellie kicked her in the back.

Toni then repeatedly stamped on her head before kicking her in the face.

The pair’s younger sister Abbie stood over the victim’s motionless body.

A crowd of people began to congregate around the victim and Tania, who had been uninvolved in the attack up to this point, began pushing people out of the way.

In a daze, the victim tried to lift her head off the floor but Toni kicked her in the head.

A mass brawl developed and witnesses tried to give first aid to the victim but Tania pushed through the crowd and kicked the victim in her back.

She also kicked and spat at those who tried to restrain her.

The victim was hospitalised – she was left partially sighted in her right eye and suffered a facial fracture and a bleed on her brain.

Police Staff Investigator Paul Thompson, of Scarborough CID at North Yorkshire Police, said: ‘In a statement read out at court the victim said that she daily grieves for the ‘old me’ that she will never see again.

‘And that she doesn’t know what the future holds for her and misses being able to do the basic things she once took for granted.

‘I applaud her bravery. She must now face the future almost blind, not to mention the psychological trauma she has endured through no fault of her own.

‘The four women are now rightly facing the consequences of their behaviour.’

All four women pleaded guilty to affray and Toni and Ellie pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The group were sentenced at York Crown Court on March 7.

Toni was jailed for eight years and Ellie was sentenced to seven years and three months in a Young Offenders Institute.

Abbie received a suspended sentence, and their friend, Tania was jailed for one year.

Mr Thompson added: ‘This shocking and unprovoked attack has changed the victim’s life forever, not only has she lost most of her sight, she has to rely on her family to do the most simplest of tasks.

‘The four defendants had the audacity to claim it was out of character because they were drunk.

‘There is simply no excuse whatsoever for what they did and the very least they could do was to plead guilty to this disgusting act of unprovoked violence.’

The victim praised emergency services in her victim impact statement.

She thanked the police, the ambulance service, the hospital, specialists and nursing staff who ‘got me through the worse time of my life.’
