One year after the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the life of Squadron Leader Peter Bafame Anala and other Ghanaian servicemen, his family has reflected on the pain of his absence, the memories he left behind, and the enduring legacy of a man they describe as much more than a pilot.
Speaking at the National Inter-Faith Memorial Service held in Accra on Thursday, 6 August, exactly one year after the tragedy, a representative of the family, Precy Anala, said the passage of time has not erased the pain of losing a beloved husband, father, son, and brother.
Reflecting on the one-year journey since the tragedy, he said the loss of Squadron Leader Anala remains deeply painful for the family.
“Though a year has passed, it feels like yesterday. The loss of our beloved Peter Bafame Anala remains profoundly painful,” Mr Anala said.
He added: “The silence his absence creates can never be truly filled, and every day reminds us of the huge void he leaves.”
Reflecting on the person Peter Anala was beyond his military role, the family said he was a man whose impact was felt not only through his service to Ghana but also through his devotion to those closest to him.
“Peter was more than a pilot. He was a dedicated husband, a loving father, a caring son, a dependable brother, and a pillar of strength for our family,” Mr Anala said.
He described him as a patriot who served his country with commitment and distinction.
“He served his country with dedication, professionalism, and honour. We are proud of the life he lived and the legacy he left behind,” he added.
The past year, the family acknowledged, has been filled with grief, difficult adjustments, and moments of uncertainty, particularly for his wife, young daughter, mother, and other relatives who continue to feel his absence.
“The last year has not been easy. We have faced grief, unanswered questions, and tough adjustments, especially for his wife, young daughter, mother, and the entire family,” he said.
Despite the pain, he said the family has found strength through faith and the support of many people who stood with them during their darkest moments.
“We have found comfort in God’s grace and the kindness of many who have offered prayers, blessings, encouraging words, and acts of generosity. For this, we are truly grateful,” he said.
The family also remembered the other brave servicemen who lost their lives alongside Squadron Leader Anala in the helicopter crash, acknowledging the shared grief carried by their loved ones.
“We also honour with respect the brave men who lost their lives alongside Peter. Their families share the same pain and longing.”
The representative said the families of the fallen officers remain united in remembrance, hope, and prayer, adding that the sacrifices of their loved ones should inspire a renewed commitment to serving Ghana with integrity and selflessness.
“May the memories of our departed loved ones inspire us to serve our nation with integrity and selflessness,” he said.
The family expressed appreciation to the president and the government of Ghana for the support and compassion extended to the bereaved families over the past year.
“We deeply appreciate His Excellency the President and the Government of Ghana for supporting the bereaved families over the past year. Your compassion and presence during our darkest days means a lot to us and we will forever remember,”.
As they continue to mourn, the family said they remain hopeful and committed to preserving the values and legacy of their loved one.
“We pray for God’s strength to continue, the courage to support each other, and wisdom to uphold the legacy of our loved ones”.
The family also offered prayers for all Ghanaian servicemen and women, especially those who face danger while carrying out their national duties.
“We also pray for divine protection for all those serving our nation, especially those facing danger in their duties. Lastly, we ask you to keep the families of the fallen in your prayers,”
For the family of Squadron Leader Peter Bafame Anala, his memory continues to live through the values he represented and the lives he touched.

The memorial honours eight prominent Ghanaians whose lives were cut short in the air crash while they were undertaking official national duties. Their sudden deaths plunged the nation into mourning, prompting an outpouring of grief from citizens across the country and tributes from the international community.
The victims were Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology and Member of Parliament for Tamale Central; Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Sarpong, Vice-Chairman of the National Democratic Congress; Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO); Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah of the Ghana Air Force.
The eight lost their lives when the military helicopter crashed in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region while en route to Obuasi on official government business.
Their passing was regarded as a significant national loss, not only because of the positions they occupied but also because of their commitment to duty, leadership and national development.
