Midfielder Thomas Partey’s return to England ended in a defeat for his team Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League.

Tottenham Hotspurs began their 2025/2026 UEFA Champions League campaign with a 1-0 victory against Villarreal on Tuesday, September 17, at home in London.

Spurs got off to a perfect start, opening the scoring inside 4 minutes after Villarreal goalkeeper Luiz Júnior inadvertently turned Lucas Bergvall’s cross into the back of his own net.

The Spanish side fought back to get the equalizer but were not able to take their chances as the game ended 1-0 in favor of the home team.

Here is why Villarreal signed Thomas Partey despite fan protests

The defeat leaves Villarreal without a win in three matches across all competitions, and a tricky game against Juventus awaits them on matchday two.

Thomas Partey only enjoyed 12 minutes in regulation time after being introduced in the 78th minute to replace Pape Gueye.
