Lawyer William Kusi, counsel for the late Daddy Lumba’s wife, has stated that the ongoing court case over the musician’s funeral and widowhood rites will demonstrate that Ghanaian law truly upholds and protects the institution of marriage.

Speaking to the media on October 16, 2025, at the Kumasi High Court, Lawyer Kusi said the case, which centers on who has the legal right to perform the widowhood rites of the late musician, has captured massive public attention both in Ghana and among the Ghanaian diaspora.

According to him, the outcome will not only clarify the legal rights of married women but will also serve as a warning to individuals who assume that having children with a married man elevates them to spousal status.

“This case will show married women that the law truly protects their marriages. It’s a form of liberation, and it’s not just limited to Ghana, it’s a universal issue. Ghanaians everywhere, even those as far as Iceland, are following it closely because it will help safeguard marriages. That’s why we’re all so passionate about it. Don’t involve yourself with a married man and start having children, thinking you’ll become his wife,” he said.

Lawyer Kusi also responded to claims that Odo Broni, Daddy Lumba’s partner who lived with him prior to his death, was the one who stood by him and endured hardships. He labelled these claims as unfounded.

“It’s not true that Odo Broni suffered with Daddy Lumba; she only enjoyed. When you’re with a celebrity and living comfortably, how can you call that suffering? Was it his money you were spending that you call suffering?” he stated.

Akosua Serwaa filed a suit at the Kumasi High Court seeking an injunction to restrain Odo Broni from publicly presenting herself as the surviving widow of Daddy Lumba.

In her statement, she argued that her marriage to the musician was legally binding at the time of his death and that by law, she is the rightful person to perform the widowhood rites.

Daddy Lumba passed away on July 26, 2025 at the Bank Hospital after an illness and his burial date has been scheduled to take place on December 6, 2025 in Kumasi.
