American-Ghanaian rapper Vic Mensa has spoken out about how traditional African spiritual systems like Voodoo and Yoruba have been wrongly portrayed as evil.

According to him, this was done intentionally to make Africans reject their own beliefs and accept foreign religions.

In a video shared on his social media, the U Mad rapper explained that the demonisation of African spirituality was a tool used to control people.

He believes that by painting African traditions as evil, it became easier to make Africans turn away from their own spiritual roots.

“Voodoo and other traditional African spiritual systems like Yoruba have been demonised to be made into this evil boogeyman because it’s a brilliant way to control the people to make them hate their own God,” Vic Mensa said.

He went on to explain that once people are convinced to reject their own belief systems and accept someone else’s, they can be manipulated easily.

“If I can convince you to denounce and hate your own God and subscribe to my God, then I can convince you to do what my God said. That’s why God and the Bible was used to justify slavery because they would pinpoint and cherry pick pieces that fed a narrative.

Turn the other cheek, servants be good to thy master,” he added.

Vic Mensa also stressed that African spiritual systems are not evil, as they are often portrayed. Instead, he described them as spiritual traditions based on respect and worship of ancestors, which are similar in structure to other major religions.

“But really like ultimately the African spiritual systems from Vodoo, Yoruba, it’s really just systems of ancestor worship. They all believe that there’s one single omnipresent deity, similarly to Christianity or Islam,” he said.
