Ghanaian award-winning video director Nana Kofi Asihene has expressed frustration with the country’s tough economic conditions, stating that living in Ghana offers no real benefits to its citizens.

In a post on X on November 28, 2024, Asihene highlighted the high cost of import duties when bringing professional equipment into the country.

He shared an example in which he was forced to pay a whopping GH¢18,699.96 duty for a lens priced at $2,350 plus additional shipping costs.

He also criticised the lack of support from clients and insurance companies, pointing out that many clients are unwilling to pay for work, and insurance companies refuse to cover their equipment.

“Clients don’t want to pay for work. Insurance companies won’t insure our gear. I don’t see what the taxes are being used for. We don’t manufacture anything in this country,” he lamented.

Nana Asihene further urged Ghanaians to leave the country if they are presented with a chance.

“If you want to leave Ghana, leave. This country will not work. There is no advantage to living in Ghana. There is no advantage to being Ghanaian. None,” he added.

Asihene, who is behind some of Ghana’s most popular music videos, including Mr. Eazi’s “Skintight,” Cwesi Oteng’s “God Dey Bless Me,” and Kwabena Kwabena’s “Adult Music”, among others, joins a growing list of public figures who have expressed similar frustrations.
