Promising super middleweight Malachi “The Sharpshooter” Urquhart lived up to his nickname last Saturday night, stopping a game Daniel Jones in three fast-paced rounds in the co-main event of Dragon Fire Boxing’s “BoxingMania” series at the Coolangatta Hotel on Queensland’s beautiful Gold Coast.
After almost 12 months out of action, much of that time spent recovering from injury, Urquhart returned in impressive fashion, displaying his vast array of skills against the quick-starting and aggressive Jones from Brisbane, who looks capable of developing into a solid professional if he continues along his current path.
Urquhart benefited from several rounds of sparring with high-volume puncher Joel Pavlides and used that experience to break Jones down on the inside over the opening two rounds before opening up in the third.
With Jones pinned against the ropes midway through the stanza, referee Phil Tighe stepped in to bring the contest to an end.
The classy and popular 24-year-old Urquhart is now 2-0-1 with two knockouts and is looking to fight twice more this year before making a run at the national top 10 in 2027.
A key member of the very strong Dragonfire gym in Cudgen in the Tweed District of northern NSW, Urquhart certainly doesn’t lack quality sparring. He works extensively with teammates Liam Callanan, recently ranked No. 12 at cruiserweight by the WBA, and Australasian light heavyweight champion Owen Corrigan.
The Chinderah, NSW, resident won an Australian amateur title in Sydney in March last year, capping a short but successful 15-bout spell across amateur and corporate boxing before turning professional in June 2025.
The Sharpshooter will be back in action soon, with more details to come. Stay tuned for the next chapter in Malachi Urquhart’s professional journey.
