Ghanaian media personality and co-founder of the music streaming app Aftown, Antoine Mensah, has dismissed claims that high internet data costs are impacting music streaming in the country.

In an interview on Hitz FM, Antoine said Ghanaians are willing to invest in data for their entertainment, including music, regardless of the price.

He highlighted the growing popularity of various streaming platforms, which have actually increased music consumption in Ghana.

“One thing a Ghanaian will do is if it’s about spending data on their happiness, music, funny videos, comedy, they will spend that data there,” he said.

Despite the rising cost of data, he noted that the number of people streaming songs continues to grow.

“If anything, the influx of more streaming platforms is supporting this trend. People still stream music; it’s something they do unconsciously.

“Even YouTube… the numbers on YouTube haven’t declined; they’ve actually been on the rise over the last couple of years,” he added.

His statements are in response to claims from industry personalities such as Bullgod, Ola Michael, and Wendy Shay, who have stated that increasing internet data costs could negatively impact music streaming in the country.
