More than 170 mothers have been killed by their own sons in the past 15 years, a new report has revealed.

Data analysing the deaths of 2,000 women killed by men since 2009 has showed that nearly one in 10 of all the women were killed by their sons.

The shocking statistics have led to calls for action to be taken by the government to tackle matricide and to provide support to victims.

Mental health was described as a factor in 58 per cent of cases in the 2,000 Women report by the Femicide Census.

Karen Ingala Smith, co-founder of the campaign group, told The Guardian: ‘Male violence against mothers is a largely unrecognised but brutal reality.

‘What we see in these figures is the tip of the iceberg. These are the women who have been killed, but there will be many more hidden victims out there living their lives in absolute misery.’

Research by academics from the Oxford and Manchester universities also found that mental health was involved in 70 per cent of cases of women being killed by their sons or grandsons.

Since 2009, one woman in the UK has been killed every three days in the UK.

Of those killed, 90 per cent of them were murdered by someone they knew and 61 per cent were by a former partner.

MailOnline reveals some of the cases where a son killed their own mother.

Mayawati Bracken

The 56-year-old mother from Oxfordshire was stabbed to death by her son Julian Bracken, 18, after he became ‘triggered’ by his ‘overly affectionate’ mother.

A row over stuffing at Christmas lunch caused the student to have a panic attack at the family’s £2million Pangbourne home.

Ten days later he then stabbed his mother as she drove him to Radley College in Oxfordshire, where he was a student.

Mrs Bracken lost control of her Lexus and was found dead with a stab wound to the chest inside the vehicle by members of the public on the A340 Tidmarsh Road at the junction of Flower Hill, Reading Coroner’s Court heard today.

Her son walked directly from the car and placed himself in front of a high-speed train at Pangbourne station in Berkshire.

Bracken’s sister had informed paramedic Chris Dinsey that a dispute had taken place over Christmas dinner, ‘something to do with stuffing’ and had described it as ‘just family stuff’.

The paramedic described how Bracken’s mother had returned to the kitchen and tried to get to her son to give him a kiss.

‘She was being overly affectionate’, the paramedic told the inquest. ‘It seemed like quite an overpowering dynamic from her.’

Mr Dinsey recalled how the presence of Julian’s mother ‘riled him up’ and told how his siblings had ushered Mrs Bracken away.

The inquest heard how, the following day, Bracken had contacted NHS talking services and reported he had suffered a ‘panic attack where my hands and legs seized up.’ Appointments were offered to him but the dates were after his death.

Suzanne Henry

‘Please, please don’t do any drugs tonight,’ Suzanne Henry said in a text message to Finn, then aged just 20.

But her pleas were in vain and despite his assurances he was ‘only having a smoke’ he snorted Ketamine as he did most days.

Weeks later, he went on another ‘bender’ which left him fitting in the car park of a Morrisons supermarket at 3pm in front of shocked shoppers and staff.

Finn Henry, 21, was sentenced to seven years in prison after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter

Paramedics were called but he refused to go to hospital, instead taking more drugs – snorting it while driving his car, using his knees to steady the steering wheel as he did. Hours later he returned to his family home where he beat his petite mother to death with his fists.

The six-minute assault by the experienced boxer was heard by neighbours across the street and left his mother with a severe brain injury from which she would never recover.

Finn appeared at Stafford Crown Court and pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

He was remanded before being sentenced to seven-years-and-four-months behind bars, with an extended sentence period of four years, at Northampton Crown Court today.

Julianna Falcon

Nicholas Prosper, 19, admitted shooting his mother and two siblings at their family home last year.

He chillingly outlined his murderous intent in a 70-second video recorded just hours before he slaughtered his family.

Wearing a yellow bucket hat and a black T-shirt, the teenage fantasist calmly and dispassionately said he would take violent revenge against his 13-year-old sister Giselle over her actions in a computer game.

The video was one of several files posted online in which Prosper – who was also stopped by police on his way to carry out a school massacre – spewed his sick views, often signalling his obsession with children.

The teenager bought a 12-ball Nikko shotgun without a certificate the day before he struck.

Neighbours said Prosper spent so much time on the internet in his bedroom that those living directly underneath him in Leabank Tower had no idea he even existed – despite being on friendly terms with his mother and siblings.

There was an outpouring of grief when Prosper struck at his home, a flat on the eighth floor of one of the towers popular with young families just outside Luton town centre last year.

Resident Grazyna Karwecka, who lived above Prosper and his family, said she thought she heard a woman screaming followed by gunshot and then other loud noises.

Lynette Nash

Lynette Nash, 64, was found with serious injuries at her home in Portishead on June 27. She died at the scene.

Her son, Gavin Nash, 39, was detained indefinitely after being charged with murder.

Gavin Nash was diagnosed with a schizoaffective disorder and at court, the prosecution accepted a plea of manslaughter by diminished responsibility.

The day before she was killed, Mrs Nash dialled 999 because of concerns about her son being ‘out of control’, BBC News reported.

Mrs Nash said her son had been threatening towards her and his father Stuart.

The next day she was killed while on the phone to her husband to warn him that their son had returned.

Stuart Nash then had to listen to his son kill his wife over the phone.

Gavin Nash then called the police and told them he had murdered his mother.

Anna Jones

Anarlyn Jones blamed demons after he cut his mothers throat on May 9, 2023.

Anna Jones, 44, was found dead at her flat in Hampshire.

Anarlyn, formerly known as Bronwyn but now identifies as a male, was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder.

He told detectives he climbed on top of his mother and kept slashing her, BBC News reported.

He claimed both his mother and father abused him as a child by beating him.

Neighbours reported seeing Anarlyn on the day of the killing covered ‘head to toe in red’ and repeating ‘I’ve killed her’.

He was sentenced at Portsmouth Crown Court to life with a minimum term of 20 years and 27 days.

Sandra Hughes

Sandra’s son Mark See had recently moved back in with his mother when he doused her in petrol and set her on fire during a family row.

Mark See, 34, threw the inflammable liquid over Sandra Hughes, 63, and then ignited it with a lit cigarette at the property in Gorton, Manchester when he was told he would have to get a place of his own with his fiancee, who also lived there.

Mark See was jailed for life with a minimum of 21 years for killing his mother Sarah Hughes

Mrs Hughes, who had to walk with a zimmer frame, was engulfed in flames and was left to die of horrific burns as her son, a furniture delivery driver, fled the one-bedroom bungalow the three of them shared at 2am on July 13 last year.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze but the victim’s body was said to have been ‘incinerated’ and could only be identified via a metal plate which had been inserted in her leg following surgery for a fall.

He claimed the bottle then accidentally ignited when he lit a cigarette and he instinctively threw it on the floor, causing the blaze. See said he tried to save his mother, but had to flee after he was beaten back by the flames.

See was jailed to life imprisonment with a minimum of 21 years at Manchester Crown Court after being found guilty of murder.

Michelle Romano

Michelle Romano, 68, was stabbed to death by her son Sebastian Compton, 47, at his home in Essex in February 2024.

Police and ambulance drove to his home address where they found Michele, who, despite the best efforts of paramedics, sadly died at the scene.

Michelle Romano was stabbed to death by her son who was suffering from psychosis at the time of her death

The court heard Compton was undergoing ‘acute’ psychosis at the time of the killing.

Initially, Compton denied Michele’s murder at a court appearance at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court.

He then pleaded guilty to her manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and he was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order.

His mother Michele was described as ‘calm and good natured’ and would often visit him at his ground floor flat to help out with shopping and chores, a neighbour said
