The Lotus Foundation has brought compassion and care to the doorstep of one of Ghana’s most

overlooked populations inmates and officers of the Senior Correctional Centre (formerly Borstal

Institute) in Roman Ridge through a free medical screening exercise held on Friday, November 7, 2025.

The initiative, themed “ Changethatmatters” offered preventive healthcare services to 158 individuals, including 105 male inmates aged 12–21 and 53 officers aged 29–56. The exercise focused on raising awareness and screening for Hepatitis B, Prostate Cancer, and Breast Cancer, alongside general health checks such as blood pressure, sugar levels, malaria, and BMI assessments.

Speaking about the initiative, the Director of Strategy and Marketing, Solomon Ackon of The Lotus Foundation stated:

“Our mission is To reform lives and renew hope for the less privileged in society, including juveniles, ultimately helping them reintegrate into society. At the Senior Correctional Centre, we met young men and dedicated officers whose stories reminded us that compassion has the power to heal beyond medicine.”

The screening was made possible through donations from family and friends of the Foundation and the support of Greenland Medical Supplies, who provided key medical equipment including test kits, glucometers & strips, and a weighing scales. A team of 16 volunteers comprising medical professionals, media support and general volunteers offered their time and expertise to ensure the success of the program.

Health insights from the day revealed a generally positive health outlook among inmates, though some were identified for further medical attention. Notably, two female officers were referred for suspected breast lumps, and one person tested positive for Hepatitis B. In total, five individuals were referred for follow-up care.

One officer expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying:

“We reached out to another facility earlier in October and were asked to pay for breast screening.

The Lotus Foundation came and did everything for free, with kindness and professionalism. We are deeply grateful.”

This outreach forms part of The Lotus Foundation’s four pillars of impact, Health and Wellness for the Marginalised pillar. This is our key focus area aimed at promoting preventive healthcare and wellbeing. The Foundation also emphasized plans to build long-term partnerships with hospitals and diagnostic centres to ensure continuity of care for beneficiaries.

As part of its next steps, The Lotus

Foundation aims to make the health screening an annual initiative, expanding it to include dental, eye, and mental health services.

The Foundation extends deep appreciation to all donors, volunteers, and the management of the

Senior Correctional Centre for their cooperation and partnership in this transformative effort.

“Every act of kindness matters. This initiative reminds us that healing begins when we see and

serve others with compassion,”

About The Lotus Foundation The Lotus Foundation was founded in 2024, born from a deep compassion for the countless children

wandering the streets of Accra hungry, homeless, and hopeless about tomorrow. These young lives, driven by survival, often find themselves in conflict with the law, ending up in correctional centres.

Without guidance or opportunity, many are caught in a painful cycle that leads to a lifetime of struggle.

The Lotus Foundation was created to break that cycle to reform lives and renew hope for the less

privileged, helping them find purpose, dignity, and a place in society once more. We are duly

registered with the Government and the Department of Social Welfare of Ghana, committed to creating lasting impact in our communities.
