Ghanaian media personality Deloris Frimpong Manso, popularly known as Delay, has opened up about a difficult period in her life when uncertainty over her future pushed her to consider leaving Ghana.

Reflecting on 2006, Delay disclosed that she had hoped to use the FIFA World Cup in Germany as a chance to relocate and start a new life abroad.

At the time, she was working at Top Radio, but despite being on air, she said she had grown increasingly dissatisfied with her career. Her desire to leave Ghana had become so strong that she began making plans to travel and seek what she described as greener pastures.

Delay said she continued reporting for work, even though she had mentally detached herself from the profession.

“In 2006, the World Cup was in Germany. The World Cup was on, and I was on the radio at Top Radio. But my heart was elsewhere. I wanted to leave.

“I walked into that embassy with a dream folded in an envelope, a visa, a one-way ticket, and a plan to go and never come back. I wanted to seek greener pastures,” she said.

Her plans, however, collapsed after her visa application was rejected.

The disappointment became even more painful when a former classmate in Germany, who had earlier promised to provide her with a place to stay, stopped taking her calls after the refusal.

Delay recalled repeatedly trying to reach her classmate, only to be met with silence at a time when she was already struggling to come to terms with the rejection.

“They said no. That broke me. I had a classmate who had promised me a corner to sleep if I made it. After the refusal, I called her. And called, and called. She never answered again.

“That silence was louder than the refusal. I cried then; I didn’t understand it then. But now I know that sometimes God says no because He has built you to become the greener pasture others will travel to find,” she added.

Reminiscing, Delay now sees the experience differently. What felt like a painful setback at the time, she believes, eventually became part of the journey that shaped her career and positioned her for the success she enjoys today.
