Ghanaian rapper, Michael Owusu Addo, well-known as Sarkodie, has paid tribute to Yaw Sarpong.

Following the demise of the veteran gospel musician, Sarkodie, in a post on social media, wrote: “RIP wofa Yaw Sarpong … Thank you for strengthening our faith in the almighty… may he keep you safe.”

Sarpong, who passed away on January 20, 2026, after a long illness, was a cornerstone of modern gospel music in Ghana. His songs shaped the sound of the genre as it gained national prominence, leaving an enduring mark on the country’s music scene.

With hits like “Oko Yi” and “Wo Haw Ne Sen,” his voice became a familiar presence in churches, homes, and Christian gatherings both in Ghana and abroad. Fans and fellow musicians praised the way his powerful vocals carried lyrics rooted deeply in faith.

Since his death, tributes have poured in from across the music community, religious leaders, and public figures, many crediting him with laying the foundation for a new generation of gospel artistes.

Apart from his music, Yaw Sarpong is remembered as a man whose life and work were guided by his Christian beliefs, leaving a spiritual and cultural legacy that will span generations.
