A Democratic Senate hopeful whose mysterious disappearance from the campaign trail sparked frantic speculation and demands for ‘proof of life’ has finally resurfaced – at a Texas music festival.
James Talarico, 37, was spotted mingling with crowds at the Austin City Limits Music Festival on Friday after spending 13 days out of the public eye during the crucial final weeks of his campaign to turn Texas blue.
The Democrat, who is locked in a fiercely contested Senate race against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, had blamed his prolonged absence on a bout of flu.
But his disappearance at such a critical moment in the election campaign had raised eyebrows among both Republicans and Democrats, particularly after a string of public appearances and lucrative private fundraisers were canceled.
Now, following days of mounting questions about his whereabouts, Talarico appears to have finally recovered enough to return to the campaign trail.
‘James Talarico is back on the campaign trail talking to voters at Austin City Limits,’ campaign spokesman JT Ennis told NBC News.
Social media footage showed the Senate candidate walking through the festival grounds on Friday, marking his first reported public campaign appearance in more than a week.
His return comes after Paxton’s campaign repeatedly mocked his absence, even launching a tongue-in-cheek hunt for the missing Democrat.

In his last public appearance on September 30, Talarico spoke with Hispanic voters via Zoom, informing them he could not attend the event in person due to having the flu
‘We’ve tried posters. We’ve tried a formal proof-of-life request. Now we’re asking every Texan to join the search for Jimmy,’ the Paxton campaign declared.
The Republicans even established a telephone hotline, dubbed the ‘Tala-Freak-Out Tip Line,’ encouraging Texans to report sightings of their political rival.
Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz joined the mockery, sharing an image of a milk carton bearing Talarico’s photograph alongside the word ‘MISSING.’
Talarico’s campaign maintains he came down with the flu in September but his prolonged departure and canceling of public events and private fundraisers led to rampant speculation about what’s really going on – even among allies.
Talarico’s campaign claims he attended his last in-person event on September 29. He was last seen on a Zoom appearance on September 30 where he apologized to the Hispanic Business Council, meeting in Edinburg, Texas, for not being able to attend in person.
A political strategist who is not involved with Talarico’s campaign and spoke anonymously with Daily Mail said that canceling public events, especially private events to raise money, at such a pivotal time was a big worry.
His absence comes at a time when polls show him in position to be the first Democrat in almost 30 years to win statewide in Texas.
‘I wanted to dismiss the rumors, but when I heard about him canceling the fundraisers, that gave me pause. It’s crunch time. No (candidate) would be turning down money right now,’ said the strategist, who has worked on both Democrat and GOP campaigns in Texas and nationwide.

Talarico canceled an October 5 event with black voters in Austin
Republicans in Washington, DC, also goaded him to surface.
‘We are starting to get worried about the little socialist, and are demanding: A video of James Talarico holding a newspaper dated today, the flight he took home from his New York fundraisers, which occurred on the very same night he allegedly went to an urgent care in Dallas [and] a doctor’s note from the Dallas urgent care he allegedly visited,’ an email blasted out to reporters by the National Republican Senatorial Committee stated.
Despite Talarico‘s campaign told the Daily Mail their candidate would be back on the job this weekend.
It’s unclear what his hiatus will mean for voters or if it has damaged his campaign in any way.
An event scheduled in Austin on October 5 with black voters was among the events canceled by Talarico.
That cost the African American group $25,000 as they were unable to get money refunded for an event space that had been booked.
