Tensions within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have intensified just weeks to the party’s presidential primaries, following threats by the campaign team of Abetifi MP and flagbearer aspirant, Dr Bryan Acheampong, in the Northern Region to disrupt the internal elections over allegations of delegate coercion.
According to the Bryan camp, some regional party executives in the Northern Region are allegedly pressuring delegates to support a particular candidate, a development they describe as a serious breach of internal party democracy and fairness.
The campaign team insists that such actions, if left unchecked, could undermine the credibility and integrity of the upcoming primaries.
Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews, representatives of the Bryan campaign warned that the situation could escalate if party leadership fails to intervene promptly.
Reports indicate that they argue delegates must be allowed to exercise their franchise freely, without intimidation, inducement, or directives from regional power brokers.
“The NPP has always prided itself on being a democratic party.
“Any attempt by party executives to compel delegates to vote in a particular direction runs contrary to our values and risks eroding confidence in the entire process,” a source close to the Bryan campaign was quoted as saying.
