One of the founders of the Osibisa band, the late Teddy Osei, will be given a state funeral on Friday, April 4, 2025.

According to a statement from the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), the iconic musician, who passed away on January 14, 2025, in London, will be laid in state at the forecourt of the State House in Accra from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM for public viewing.

“Sympathizers, well-wishers, and the general public are invited to file past and pay their last respects to this iconic figure,” the statement read.

The statement further noted that at 2:00 PM, the late Afro-rock superstar’s remains will be transported to Kumasi, his hometown, where final funeral rites will be held ahead of the burial on Saturday, April 5.

MUSIGA also urged Ghanaians to line the Accra-Kumasi route, singing Osibisa’s classic hit “Woyaya” as the hearse passes through major towns.

“Ghanaians are encouraged to line the route from Accra to Kumasi and honour Teddy Osei by singing Osibisa’s classic anthem ‘Woyaya’ as the hearse passes through major towns,” the statement added.

The statement continued, “Radio and television stations are invited to participate by announcing arrival points along the route and playing Osibisa’s music throughout the day. Let us unite in giving this international superstar a rousing send-off befitting his legacy.”

Teddy Osei passed away on January 14, 2025, at age 88.

Born in Kumasi in 1937, he co-founded Osibisa in 1969, blending African rhythms with global sounds and paving the way for Afro-fusion music.

Hits like “Music for Gong Gong” and “Sunshine Day” earned the band worldwide recognition.
