Media personality MzGee has raised deep concerns about what she calls the “growing powerlessness” of teachers in Ghana’s schools, linking it to a breakdown in discipline among students.

Speaking on her show Gee O’clock, the broadcaster lamented how recent educational policies and public attitudes have stripped teachers of authority to maintain order in the classroom.

“Teachers are now afraid to even correct a child,” she said. “If you touch a student, society comes for you. GES comes for you. Everyone comes for you.”

She recalled her own school days when teachers were strict but students respected them. While she clarified that she does not condone corporal punishment, she questioned whether the abolition of caning and other disciplinary tools had been reviewed for its effectiveness.

“Since we put out that abolishment, have we checked if it’s done us more good than harm?” she asked. “What empowerment are we giving the teacher over the student?”

MzGee expressed dismay at viral videos showing students challenging teachers in classrooms, describing it as a symptom of weakened authority.

“We’ve built a system where no teacher can touch a child, and now we’re seeing students standing up to teachers. How are we training the next generation to respect leadership?” she added.

For her, discipline must remain central to education, and policies meant to protect children must also protect teachers’ ability to guide and correct. “If you remove all means of discipline, what are you leaving teachers with?” she questioned.
