What began as a simple community gathering under the evening sky in Salamanca on Sunday, January 25, 2026, quickly descended into horror, as gunmen opened fire at a local soccer field in the ‘Loma de Flores’ neighborhood, killing 11 people and injuring 12 others.

According to reports, families had assembled at the pitch, a familiar space where children play, and neighbors connect when armed attackers stormed the area and unleashed a barrage of bullets.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos as people scrambled for cover. Among the injured were a woman and a child, underscoring the indiscriminate nature of the assault.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, transporting victims to nearby hospitals as police secured the area. The soccer field, once alive with laughter and conversation, was left marked by sirens, flashing lights, and grief.

Salamanca is located in Guanajuato, one of Mexico’s most violence-plagued states in recent years, where clashes between criminal groups have fueled instability.

Mayor César Prieto condemned the shooting as a “cowardly” act and expressed solidarity with the victims’ families.

He confirmed that authorities at the municipal, state, and federal levels are coordinating efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible.

The tragedy comes at a sensitive moment for Mexico, which is set to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States and Canada.
