Sprint sensation Amy Hunt was last night poised for a third gold medal after helping GB’s 4×100 metre relay team cruise into the European Athletics Championships final.
A win would see the 24-year-old achieve a record-equalling third gold in Birmingham after victory in the 100m and 200m.
That would match the achievement of her relay teammate Dina Asher-Smith’s triple European success in Berlin in 2018.
But Hunt, from Newark, Nottinghamshire, could go a step further if her GB team also wins today’s inaugural 4×100 mixed relay event.
In interviews after her last track triumph she told how she wanted to ‘be iconic’ by becoming the first athlete to win four European gold medals at the same championship.
‘Two out of four, baby,’ she told the BBC at the time. ‘This is becoming a magical week and one I will remember for the rest of my life.’
But she is taking nothing for granted, insisting that there would be ‘no celebrations and no champagne until Sunday night’.
On her prospects for the women’s 4×100, which was due to take place last night, she added: ‘I have got a debt to the ladies.

‘We have got to come out here and make sure we show them who the best sprinting nation is in Europe.’
Hunt is hitting a peak of outstanding form at the right moment. In June she broke 11 seconds in the 100 metres for the first time, clocking 10.97 in a second-place finish at a Diamond League meeting in Stockholm.
Three days later she again ran under 11 seconds at Norway’s Bislett Games before retaining her UK 100m title on June 20 with a time of 11.01 seconds.
Commentator Steve Cram, a former 1500 metre world champion, has said she has all the elements of a great athlete: ‘The speed, the endurance, the confidence.’
Meanwhile, Asher-Smith, currently the fastest UK woman on record, has won six European golds during five championships.
