Spain have been tipped as one of the favorites to win the 2026 World Cup Spain have been tipped as one of the favorites to win the 2026 World Cup

The spokesperson for the prominent Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, Patxi Lopez, has warned that their national team might withdraw from the 2026 FIFA World Cup if Israel qualifies for the tournament.

According to Patxi Lopez, the Spanish government is concerned about Israel’s war with Palestinians and would take a decision about their participation in the global football tournament at the right time.

“We will assess the situation [participating in the World Cup] at the right time. What we want is for people to realize that if Israeli teams cannot take part in sporting events or Eurovision, some are starting to open their eyes.

“Because ours are wide open and do not tolerate what they see, which is why we cannot and will not remain silent,” Lopez said, as reported by RMC Sport.

His comments come a fortnight after the 11th stage of the Spanish cycling race Vuelta a España was truncated and finished without a winner due to pro-Palestine protesters on the course.

The organisers explained that concerns over the safety of cyclists and officials prompted the decision.

According to reports, Israel-Premier Tech, a cycling team, was the main focus of the protests. The commencement of the race was interrupted when protesters heckled a group near San Mames stadium.

Meanwhile, Israel are chasing their first FIFA World Cup qualification after 1970.

In their UEFA qualifying group, they are level on points with Italy, despite playing one game more than the Azzuries.
