The Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture of South Africa, Peace Mabe, has announced that her country is set to host the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

According to her, discussions with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have been finalised, and preparations are already underway for South Africa to host the tournament.

She indicated that the country will be fully prepared to host and aims at making an impression by winning the tournament and possibly securing qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

“Tonight, I would like to announce that South Africa will be hosting the 2026 WAFCON, which we all know is a qualifying tournament for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil,” Mabe said during the Super League Awards ceremony.

This announcement comes as a surprise to many football fans and pundits, as Morocco had initially been billed to host the tournament before the late change.

Reports indicate that South Africa was offered the hosting rights after Morocco pulled out due to undisclosed issues.

Meanwhile, CAF is yet to issue an official communiqué to confirm the change in host nation or explain the reasons behind the late shift.

The 2026 WAFCON is scheduled to take place from March 17 to April 3, 2026.
