Motorists were left stunned when a police team swooped on two cars stopped in traffic on a busy Sydney road and fired rounds before arresting the occupants.

Heavily armed tactical operations officers carried out the operation on River Road in Revesby in the city’s south shortly after 4pm on Tuesday.

A Mercedes sedan and a Mitsubishi SUV, located a few hundred metres apart, were both targetted in the arrests, in full view of terrified commuters just as peak hour was getting underway.

Witnesses reported hearing gunfire and footage of the incident shot by other motorists shows both vehicles were left badly-damaged and peppered with bullet holes.

It’s understood the operation had significant pre-planning, with the occupants believed to have links to organised crime.

Stunning footage captured officers wearing helmets and ballistic vests as they bashed on the sides of the Mercedes sedan while an officer appeared to point a gun directly at an occupant.

Police were seen directing traffic away from the crowded intersection as officers dragged two men from that car.

At the same time, officers carried out a similar operation on a separate Mitsubishi Outlander SUV just down the road.

Officers were filmed dragging the occupant of the SUV from the vehicle.

He was later pictured sitting handcuffed beside the vehicle, which also took bullet damage.

Police confirmed an operation was launched in Revesby and neighbouring Condell Park but would not be drawn on its aims.

‘There is no threat to the public,’ a NSW Police spokesperson told the Daily Mail.

‘More information will be released when operationally appropriate.’

Multiple lanes of traffic on River Road were closed to commuters, causing major delays.

The roads were fully reopened by 8pm.
