A 14-year-old boy has been arrested after six people were shot on a busy street in Sweden.

Gunfire broke out at around 2am on Saturday on Gävle, an area lined with bars and restaurants, sparking a huge emergency response.

Photos show police swarming the city centre and cordoning off the street as victims were carried to ambulances.

The teenager is being held on suspicion of attempted murder and is due to be questioned later today, police confirmed.

The victims, mostly young adults but including people under 18, were all taken to hospital, spokesman Tobias Ahlén-Svalbro said.

The extent of their injuries has not been revealed but at least three people with gunshot wounds ran into a restaurant for shelter as the attack unfolded, according to local reports.

Mr Ahlén-Svalbro added: ‘So far we are working broadly and I cannot confirm that there is any connection to the criminal network environment.

‘I can’t go into any possible theories. We don’t initially suspect it’s terror-related.

‘The incident is being investigated as attempted murder. We have a large resource on site in the area, so our assessment is that there is no danger to the public, so I understand that people may be concerned.

‘It is quite close in time after the incident that the boy was taken into custody. The boy is suspected of attempted murder.’

Police also said there was no immediate danger to the public.

Residents described their shock, with one woman telling local radio: ‘You don’t really want to be out late at night.

‘You’re worried about your children. What a society we’ve created. It’s crazy.’

Another witness added: ‘It feels terrible. Six people are being shot a few meters away from me.’

Gävle, home to around 80,000 people, is 86 miles north of Stockholm and is Sweden’s 13th largest city.
