Ademola Lookman may have hit the ground running at Atlético de Madrid, but manager Diego Simeone wants more than just goals from his new star.
The Nigerian forward has made an explosive start to life in Spain, registering four goals and two assists in his first six matches.
His influence has already been felt across La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League, quickly justifying Atlético’s decision to bring him in.
On Saturday, February 21, 2026, Lookman was again decisive as Atlético came from a goal down to defeat RCD Espanyol 4-2. His goal helped spark the turnaround, underlining his knack for delivering in big moments.
Yet Simeone, never one to be carried away by attacking flair alone, made it clear that improvement is still required.

“Lookman brings us goals, more goals than overall play. He can still improve his overall play and defensive work,” the Argentine said.
Simeone stressed that adaptation to Atlético’s intense, disciplined system is crucial.
“We need him to adapt to the team’s way of playing in those aspects. His message is that he wants to improve as a footballer. He has that goal-scoring instinct; those goals he has scored are no coincidence. But we also need more from him in the overall game,” he added.
