A large area surrounding a popular beach has been shut down following the discovery of a ‘suspicious device’, possibly an explosive.

Queensland Police closed the area around Peregian Beach, on the Sunshine Coast’s north, about 12.30pm on Friday.

Officers established an exclusion zone spanning David Low Way from Podargus Parade to Woodland Drive.

That zone includes Martin St, Avocet St, Peregian Esp, Parakeet Cres, Egrer St, Teal St, Currawong Cres, Osprey Ave, Tern St, Garnet St, Ibis St, Pelican St, and Kingfisher Drive.

‘Specialist police are in attendance,’ Queensland Police said in a statement.

‘Residents are advised to stay indoors unless notified by police.

‘Members of the public are advised to avoid the area.’
