A dramatic and spine-chilling display of traditional rites left many mourners stunned during the one-week funeral observation of the late mother of popular Kumawood actor, Komfo Kolege, in the Ashanti Region.

The solemn occasion, held at Ejisu, took an unexpected turn when a traditional executioner, locally known as an “abrafo,” performed a controversial and jaw-dropping ritual — biting off the head of a live fowl in full view of the crowd.

In a short video shared online, the executioner — clad in black cloth, with three machetes tucked into his garment and black paint on his face — is seen standing in front of a row of mourners as he bites off the head of the live fowl in a single motion.

The video captured several fear-stricken mourners watching the spectacle in shock.

According to cultural experts, the act is a rare and sacred ritual traditionally performed to honor the spirits of the departed and to ward off evil forces during the funerals of notable individuals, especially royalty or persons with spiritual backgrounds.

Despite the controversy, the ceremony continued with traditional drumming, dancing, and libation pouring, reflecting the deep-rooted customs of the Ashanti people.

The final funeral rites for Komfo Kolege’s mother are expected to take place in the coming weeks, with a larger gathering anticipated.
