Ghanaian dancehall star Shatta Wale has revealed that he has earned approximately $45,000 from gifts received during his TikTok livestreams, highlighting the growing financial opportunities social media presents to musicians and other entertainers.

The award-winning musician made the revelation during an appearance on rapper YPee’s The Real Ones podcast, where he discussed how he initially hesitated to join TikTok before discovering its potential as a source of income.

According to Shatta Wale, whose real name is Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., he initially relied on Facebook Live to interact with his fans before popular Ghanaian content creator Jackline Mensah repeatedly encouraged him to explore TikTok Live.

The musician admitted that he was initially reluctant to join the platform because he believed it was primarily meant for younger people, particularly members of Generation Z.

“It used to be Facebook Live at first. Until this lady named Jackline Mensah kept pressuring me to go on TikTok Live,” he recalled.

Shatta Wale explained that he questioned why he should join TikTok because he did not consider himself part of the generation that predominantly used the platform.

“At first, I was skeptical. What am I doing with TikTok? I’m not a Gen Z. But then other people kept pressuring me until I decided to check it out,” he said.

However, his decision to give the platform a chance appears to have paid off, with the musician revealing that he has received substantial financial rewards from viewers during his livestreams.

“When I opened my TikTok account, I had made about $45,000 on there because I get a lot of gifts during my livestreams,” he disclosed.

The amount, equivalent to more than GH¢700,000 based on the approximate conversion provided, underscores the potential earnings available to popular personalities who successfully engage their online audiences.

TikTok Live allows viewers to send virtual gifts to creators during livestreams. These gifts can generate earnings for eligible creators, although the amount they ultimately receive depends on the platform’s conversion system and applicable fees.

Beyond his TikTok earnings, Shatta Wale also highlighted the importance of maintaining an active relationship with fans through social media and live performances.

His experience demonstrates how musicians can explore opportunities beyond traditional revenue sources such as music sales, streaming royalties, endorsements and concert performances.

Shatta Wale’s revelation is also likely to encourage discussions among emerging Ghanaian musicians about the need to embrace digital platforms and understand how online engagement can contribute to their careers.
