JACOBU DISTRICT, Ashanti Region – The Ashanti Regional Police Command has initiated a full-scale investigation into a brazen assault on a police patrol team by a large group of civilians in Bepotenten Sukuum. The violent confrontation, which resulted in injuries and the temporary theft of a service weapon, unfolded on the evening of January 23, 2026.
According to police reports, the incident began during a routine patrol when officers intercepted a 15-year-old boy in possession of a pump-action gun. The officers retrieved the weapon and instructed the minor to have its owner report to the police station with the relevant documentation.
The situation escalated dramatically shortly afterward. The patrol team was reportedly confronted by a crowd of approximately 100 people, who blocked the road and were allegedly armed with cutlasses and firearms. The group then assaulted the officers and managed to seize one police service rifle during the attack.
In the ensuing confrontation to regain control, police opened fire. One individual who had taken the service rifle was shot, and another alleged assailant sustained injuries. Authorities have confirmed that the stolen service rifle was successfully recovered at the scene.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a serious affront to law and order. The investigation is ongoing, with officials working to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the assault and disarmament of the officers.
This incident highlights the escalating tensions and security challenges faced by law enforcement in certain communities. The police have assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of officers and residents, and to prevent any such future occurrences.
