Security consultant Richard Kumadoe has praised the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Immigration Service for their recent efforts to clamp down on streetism in the capital, describing their actions as vital to enhancing public safety and restoring order on major roads.

According to Kumadoe, while streetism—often associated with vulnerable individuals living and operating on the streets—can appear merely as a social issue, it also presents serious security concerns.

“Streetism in itself can be abhorrent and disastrous sometimes, but in the long run, it can become a conduit and a convenient platform for all manner of crime distributions and transferring activities,” he said.

The presence of street children and hawkers on major roads in Accra has been a long-standing concern for residents, with many pointing to the risks posed to both pedestrians and motorists, particularly during peak hours.

Kumadoe emphasised that such activities often result in frequent public safety breaches in cities where streetism is widespread and unchecked.

He urged the general public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or unlawful street activities to the appropriate authorities.

“Let’s all be watchful and report similar actions to the appropriate authorities for redress,” he advised.

The security consultant’s comments come on the back of recent operations by security agencies aimed at removing street dwellers and unauthorised vendors from key intersections and roadways across the capital.

The clean-up exercise, he noted, is a step in the right direction toward restoring law and order in public spaces
