Ghana will host the 2025 World Scrabble Championship

The sports ministry has disclosed that it will commence engagement with the Ministry of Education to add Scrabble to the games in various schools across the country.

It was stated that since Scrabble contributes immensely to cognitive development, it would be prudent to embed it in the sports curriculum in schools.

The ministry stated that its aim is to ensure that all sporting disciplines gain attention in the country to elevate them to the standard of football and others.

“As a ministry, we will engage the Ministry of Education to ensure Scrabble becomes more widely integrated into our school sports. It should not remain an occasional pastime for a few but must become a tool for cognitive development for our children as well. The vision of this government is to see equity across all sports shine, just like football, athletics, and boxing,” said Gideon Hammond, who read the speech on behalf of sports minister Kofi Adams during the launch of the 2025 World English Scrabble Players Championship (WESPAC).

He added, “Very soon, the ministry will roll out the National Recreational and Wellness Program, a flagship initiative designed to promote wellness, recreation, and an active lifestyle. Scrabble will be one of the key activities embedded in this program.”

The 2025 World Scrabble Championship will take place in Accra from November 10 to 16, 2025.
