Ghanaian rapper Michael Owusu Addo, popularly known as Sarkodie, has denied claims that he is affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking at the Kumasi Rising Music, Media, and Tourism Dialogue event on September 25, 2025, at the IDL Conference Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Sarkodie noted that he has no links to the political party.

In a conversation with media personality Serwaa Amihere, the rapper who is getting ready for his Rapperholic Homecoming concert, mentioned that he has never been in touch with any NPP officials and has not received any financial support to promote or campaign for the party.

“Do I have a connection with the NPP? I do not know any member of the party. People keep saying that I did a song for them, but they have not given me any money. I said a line in a verse about our ex-president, for which I still stand by,” he said.

For years, Sarkodie has been at the center of political speculation, with critics suggesting he subtly endorsed the NPP in his 2020 hit song ‘Happy Day.’

The song, which featured Kuami Eugene, included the line “Nana Toaso” a phrase that was also the campaign slogan of then-President Nana Akufo-Addo as he sought a second term in office.

Many interpreted the lyric as an endorsement, with the ruling party at the time even adopting it during campaign rallies.

Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has cleared the air regarding claims that he took money from the NPP to produce a campaign song in support of the party.

He explained that the inspiration behind the song was the positive effects of the free education policy on society and he continues… pic.twitter.com/EdHimPAP2Y
