In another chapter of their growing AFCON rivalry, Senegal once again came out on top against Egypt, defeating the Pharaohs 1–0 on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, to reach the final of the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations.

Just like in the 2021 final, it was the Lions of Teranga who celebrated, extending their dominant run to 11 wins from their last 12 matches against North African opponents.

The first half was driven more by tension than attacking quality. Egypt failed to attempt a single shot, while Senegal, despite controlling large spells, struggled to turn their dominance into clear chances.

Mohamed El Shenawy was rarely troubled, comfortably dealing with efforts from Habib Diarra and Pape Gueye, while Nicolas Jackson wasted a promising opening by shooting well over the bar.

Senegal also suffered a setback when captain Kalidou Koulibaly was forced off injured, and both he and Diarra were booked, meaning they will miss the final.

After the interval, Senegal continued to press but found it difficult to break down Egypt’s disciplined defence. Long-range efforts became their main outlet, with substitute Lamine Camara firing straight at El Shenawy.

The decisive moment arrived in the 78th minute when Sadio Mané latched onto a loose ball and struck a fine effort from the edge of the area, registering his fifth goal involvement of the tournament and taking his AFCON tally to 11, level with Mohamed Salah.

Egypt offered little in response and never looked likely to equalise, managing only one shot on target.

Senegal closed out the match comfortably to reach their third AFCON final in five tournaments, while the Pharaohs were denied what would have been their 10th appearance in the final.
