People were evacuated from a gym at Westfield Bondi Junction after a flooding incident disrupted their workouts.

Members of Virgin Active gym’s branch at the shopping centre could be seen gathered outside the entrance on Wednesday afternoon.

‘I was on the treadmill when I heard a woman screaming from the changing room area,’ one gymgoer said.

‘There was black water coming down from the roof.’

It is understood the roof collapsed due to a water leak from a spa on a second level, according to a building service technician.

‘There was a leak on one of the services inside our wet pool area, it caused a bit of ceiling damage,’ he told the Daily Telegraph.

‘We pulled everyone out and we are temporarily closed.

‘We are hoping to have the gym floor back this afternoon, but the wet area will not open until we figure out a bit of a solution.’

Virgin Active Gym has said it is working quickly to reopen the gym for members

Virgin Active Gym general manager Emma King has said staff and members were fine, but the cause of the leak remains unknown.

‘Bondi Westfield temporarily closed due to flooding,’ a statement on the gym’s social media said.

‘We understand this may be frustrating and truly appreciate your patience while we work quickly to get the club open.

‘We’ll share an update on the reopening of the club as soon as possible.’

This is a breaking story. More to come
