Rejoice Tsotso Bortei is alleged to have been assaulted in the August 18 incident

The Chairman of the Greater Accra Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), has voiced dissatisfaction with the findings of a committee established by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh to investigate the alleged assault of rotation nurse Rejoice Tsotso Bortei at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital) on August 18, 2025.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, August 30, 2025, Asare criticized the committee for failing to adequately address the assault itself.

“If they were to go and investigate assault, I know a legal person was on the committee. What is an assault, and what are the elements of the same? The intention to cause fear or harm, the act of what you do that causes fear or harm, and the menace of the threat or the harm. These are the elements which I expected the legal brain of the committee to know,” he argued.

Asare emphasized that assault does not require visible injuries.

“You do not need anyone to break his or her wrist before you establish an assault. At no point in anybody’s discussion did anybody say there was a fracture,” he said.

He further questioned the committee’s failure to consult the hospital’s medical director, who allegedly confirmed a dislocation when Bortei was examined the morning after the incident.

“I was disappointed that the committee didn’t find time to investigate the doctor who saw the lady the following morning,” Asare added.

The committee, chaired by Dr. Lawrence Ofori-Boadu, submitted its report on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, stating that medical examinations found no evidence of a wrist fracture or shoulder dislocation in Bortei, who reported her injuries a day after the incident. She received pain relief medication, rest advice, and psychological support.
