Sold-out “Haciendo Historia” delivers a landmark championship win, a stunning upset and an electric night of boxing

Eveling “La Colocha” Ortega gave Nicaragua a night to remember on Friday, October 30, capturing the WBA Interim Women’s Light Flyweight World Championship before a sold-out, roaring crowd at the Olof Palme Convention Center. Her victory crowned All Star Boxing’s “Haciendo Historia,” an international evening of championship boxing that lived up to its name.

With music, bright lights, and a charged atmosphere surrounding the ring, the Chontales fighter became the first Nicaraguan woman to win a world boxing championship on home soil. The event reached audiences beyond Nicaragua through ESPN KnockOut and Canal 4, with Disney+ coverage in participating territories.

Ortega delivered one of the finest performances of her career against Mexico’s defending champion Alma “La Leona” Meraz. Sharp combinations, effective movement, and sustained determination helped the hometown favorite take command of the action and secure a majority decision after 10 rounds. Two judges scored the bout 97–93 for Ortega, while the third scored it 95–95.

The victory lifted Ortega’s record to 14–5, with three knockouts, and extended her winning streak to eight. Already a WBO Latino champion, “La Colocha” added a world championship to her résumé as the crowd erupted in an emotional celebration of a milestone for Nicaraguan women’s boxing.

The night’s biggest shock came in the WBO/NABO Bantamweight Championship bout. Julio Cabrera, stepping in on just one week’s notice, seized his opportunity with a stunning fourth-round knockout of previously unbeaten Bryan “El Tsunami” Blandón. The exciting contest ended abruptly at 1:40 of the round, earning Cabrera the championship and producing an upset that brought the crowd to its feet.

Mexico’s Edwin “Canito” Cano and Nicaragua’s Kevin Vivas delivered another gripping contest between fighters with world-level junior flyweight experience. Their lively eight-round battle remained fiercely competitive, with momentum shifting throughout a close fight that could have gone either way. Cano emerged with a split-decision victory after both men gave the audience plenty to applaud.

In a six-round super bantamweight war, All Star Boxing’s unbeaten prospect Yanior “Faraón” Vega (6-0, 4 KOs) overcame Isaac “El Mágico” Berríos (6-2-2) by decision. The two Nicaraguans matched each other’s determination in a crowd-pleasing contest that helped set the tone for the championship drama to follow.

Puerto Rico’s Miladie Santana-Rivera (8-0, 4 KOs) also claimed championship honors, stopping Colombia’s Adriana Tobón in the second round to win the WBO Latino Women’s Junior Flyweight title.

In additional action, Alexander Hernández stopped Onalvi Sierra in the opening round, while Maynor Cardenal defeated Franklin Chacón by decision.

For promoter Felix “Tuto” Zabala Jr. and All Star Boxing, Inc., the evening added another chapter to the company’s commitment to Nicaragua, which began in 2009. Over the past 17 years, the company has presented numerous internationally televised events, giving Nicaraguan fighters opportunities to compete before audiences across the Americas and beyond.

That history includes Nicaragua’s first women’s world championship fight on December 19, 2009, when Hanna Gabriels won the WBO welterweight title in Managua. Seventeen years later, All Star Boxing helped provide the stage for another Nicaraguan woman to achieve world championship glory in front of her own people.
