Residents of Nsawam, Pokuase Amasaman and adjoining communities in the Greater Accra Region on Saturday, July 12, 2025, staged a peaceful protest over the stalled reconstruction of the Ofankor-Nsawam road, expressing frustration over the delay.

The vital highway, which connects Accra to parts of the Eastern Region, has become nearly impassable due to large potholes, erosion, and severe traffic congestion.

Commuters and businesses say the delay in completing the project is hurting economic productivity and endangering lives.

The demonstrators made up of traders, drivers, and local residents, marched with placards bearing messages such as “Accidents Daily, How Many More?”, “Accountability Missing!”, and “Years of Dust, Delays and Broken Promises.”

Jeffrey Smith, organiser of the Nsawam Traffic Watch Community, said the communities have run out of patience.

“All we need is for the government to address our concerns. This road has been left in this terrible state for far too long,” he said.

Following the protest, the Member of Parliament for Amasaman, Sedem Kweku Afenyo, gave the assurance that the road would soon be fixed.

He revealed that he had received firm commitments from the Minister for Roads and Highways, indicating that the government is prioritizing the completion of the long-stalled project.

“I can give them that assurance [that the road will be fixed]. To tell you the truth, the minister has actually mentioned to me that this road is going to be the first road they will push for and make sure that the work is done,” the MP stated.

The project was initially scheduled for completion in July 2024.
