Residents of Damang in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region have praised Damang Gold Mine Ltd for developments in the community since it took over operations six months ago, while calling for more employment opportunities for women and National Service personnel.

Speaking on a special edition of Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen programme in Tarkwa on Thursday, October 22, the residents said they had witnessed positive changes since the mine’s management changed.

One resident commended the new management but appealed to subcontractors working with the mine to engage more National Service personnel.

The resident argued that they should be given opportunities to serve at the mine rather than being posted mainly to government institutions, where allowances are lower.

Another resident praised Engineers and Planners Chief Executive Officer Ibrahim Mahama for road construction projects, saying the improved roads had made journeys to Kumasi easier and less tiring.

“I would like to appreciate Mr Ibrahim Mahama for the construction of roads. At first, whenever I was going to Kumasi, it was very tiring, but now it is much easier,” the resident said.

A third resident also expressed gratitude for the developments but urged the company to create more jobs for women.

“Looking at the latest developments within the Damang community within six months of operations by Damang Gold Mine, we are really grateful to Mr Ibrahim Mahama, but we are pleading with them to employ more ladies in the company,” the resident said.

Background

Damang Gold Mine, formerly operated by Gold Fields Ghana Limited, was handed over to Engineers and Planners in April 2026 after the company won a competitive tender for the concession.

The symbolic handover took place at the mine site on Saturday, April 18, 2026, with the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, overseeing the transfer.

The process followed the expiration of Gold Fields’ lease, after which the government put the concession up for competitive tender supervised by the Minerals Commission.
