Residents were forced to evacuate an apartment block on the Gold Coast after a fire broke out on a balcony.

Emergency services rushed to the Pacific Keys Central Building on Hooker Boulevard at Mermaid Waters just after 10am on Tuesday.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesperson told the Daily Mail the fire began on a balcony on the seventh level.

Eight crews attended the scene and contained the fire to a single unit, extinguishing the blaze within about 20 minutes.

Two people – a man in his 30s and a woman in her 80s – were assessed by paramedics on scene for minor smoke inhalation.

The man was taken to Robina Hospital in a stable condition, while the woman was transported to John Flynn Private Hospital in Tugun, also in a stable condition.

It comes after a witness in a neighbouring building posted footage on social media showing flames billowing from a unit midway up the tower.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
