Economist Worlanyo Mensah has called on the government to undertake an extensive reshuffling of appointees and ministers to accelerate national development.

Dr Mensah expressed concern that many ministers, except for with oversight on finance, roads, and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, appear to have relaxed their efforts after the initial economic gains.

He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), ahead of the State of the Nation Address (SONA) that such an attitude conveyed the impression that the country had reached a satisfactory stage of development, despite persistent structural challenges.

He further noted that periodic changes in leadership could reinvigorate ministries that might have slowed in executing their mandate. He explained that reshuffling constituted a legitimate instrument of governance intended to enhance administrative effectiveness and reinvigorate public institutions, adding that periodic changes in ministers or appointees were not punitive measures, but constitute strategic decisions aimed at strengthening performance.

Dr Mensah said by reassigning portfolios or bringing in new leadership, the government would be able to respond more effectively to emerging national priorities, correct inefficiencies, and ensure that public officials remained accountable to clearly defined and measurable outcomes.

He said such adjustments were essential to maintaining dynamism within the public sector and preventing institutional complacency and further underscored the necessity for deliberate policy interventions to create an enabling environment in which businesses could operate efficiently and at reduced cost.

He noted that the state could not single-handedly provide employment opportunities for the entire population; therefore, fostering private sector growth remained critical to job creation and economic expansion.
