EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa

Michael Donyina Mensah, Executive Director of the Centre for Public Opinion and Awareness (CenPOA), a non-partisan, non-governmental civil society organisation, believes that the country’s resetting must have an impact on the Electoral Commission (EC).

He stated that the EC Chairperson and her deputies should resign or be removed from office due to the high levels of incompetence demonstrated.

Speaking on Rainbow Radio’s International Election Watch, Mr. Donyina Mensah stated that EC officials have failed to discharge their duties and do not deserve to remain in office.

“The EC Chairperson and her deputies must do the honourable thing and resign from office because they failed to fulfil their duties,” he said.

He questioned why the EC had failed to announce or publish any collated presidential election results on its own official website, citing concerns that this could lead to tensions and violent behaviour.

He stated that the EC has not demonstrated any transparency, credibility, or accountability.

“This current leadership of the EC was part of the problems created by the NPP government, so if we have voted to reset Ghana, I believe the resetting agenda must start somewhere, and it should start with the EC.”

“This is not the first time that people have complained about the performance of the EC Chair and her deputies.

“When you take away all these concerns and the issues that have emerged, you will also have concerns about the performance of the EC to be worried about. The performance of this EC is below the belt. This is the EC that has organised an election in 2020 where twenty people died, and in this year, we have also witnessed the death of two people.”

He added, “It is not surprising that the EC has performed poorly in their duties. For the first time in recorded history, ballot papers have been destroyed in unprecedented numbers. I’ve never witnessed this level of incompetence before. So, if you ask me about our assessment of the EC’s performance, if the officials respect themselves, they will resign.”
