Black Stars management committee chairman Dr Randy Abbey

Broadcast journalist Nana Yaw Kesseh has blamed Black Stars management committee chairman Dr Randy Abbey for the sorry state of Ghana football.

The Peace FM news anchor claimed that Dr Randy Abbey is closely aligned with the President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, adding that he would have been disappointed had Dr Abbey been appointed to the sports ministry.

“I would’ve been disappointed had Dr Randy Abbey been appointed as Minister of Sports. It would’ve surprised me. No one can convince me that Dr Randy Abbey is not part of the mess in Ghana football. Nothing is happening in Ghana football that Dr Randy Abbey is not involved in. He and Kurt Okraku are allies. From teams becoming defunct to the selection of unmerited players and issues of promotion and demotion in the league, Dr Randy Abbey is involved. That is why he could not have been anywhere near football,” he said on Peace FM shared on YouTube by Nsem Pii TV.

He lauded President John Dramani Mahama for not appointing the former Good Morning Ghana host to the sports ministry.

“I think the president was very smart in that decision, and I commend him for it. He could not have appointed Randy Abbey to the sports ministry.”

However, Kesseh supported Dr Randy Abbey’s appointment as the Acting Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board.

The Peace FM news anchor argued that individuals without prior experience in a sector often turn out well, citing former Minister of Defence Dr. Kwame Addo Kufuor as an example.

“Dr. Kwame Addo Kufuor is one of the best defence ministers we’ve had. He is one of the best we have had, but did he have a background in security?

“Randy has a PhD, and anyone who has studied to that level is highly intelligent. He has hosted Good Morning Ghana for over 20 years, so I don’t think there is anything in this country that he doesn’t have at least a brief knowledge of. I don’t believe Dr Randy Abbey is so uninformed that he won’t perform well at COCOBOD.”

President John Dramani Mahama appointed Dr. Randy Abbey as the Acting Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.

In a letter signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, the appointment was made per Article 195(1) of the Constitution and Section 12(2) of the Ghana Cocoa Board Act, 1984 (PNDCL 81).
