Queen eShun has advised emerging artistes to think twice before handing over their careers to record labels, arguing that some deals in the industry can quietly erode an artiste’s independence and stall their growth.

Speaking on Starr Showbiz with Feeling Daddy on Starr 103.5 FM, the Ghanaian singer and songwriter, born Ethel Esi Eshun, reflected on the lessons she learned navigating the business side of music. Her decision to remain independent, she said, came after confronting the realities of certain management arrangements.

“I realised that managers are looking at their interests, and sometimes that can affect you even more,” she said. “These contracts are death traps. They trap you for a long time. They take your freedom. It kind of stops you from singing for a while. You can’t even release your songs. It’s a whole mess.”

Based on that experience, Queen eShun encouraged artistes to treat contracts with caution rather than excitement. She acknowledged that managers and distribution companies can play valuable roles, but insisted that no agreement should be signed without proper scrutiny.

“If you do get a contract, have a lawyer look through it. If they think it’s a great deal, then go ahead. But usually, there are hidden clauses that you overlook, and at the moment you sign, it traps you,” she explained.

She also revisited a pivotal chapter in her own journey. After taking time off to pursue her education, she returned to music operating under “Queenie Shawn Music,” managing her affairs independently. Running her brand herself, she noted, brought a sense of stability and confidence.

“It’s better for you to do something on your own. You get your team on board, but it’s still your thing. It makes the job easier and gives you peace of mind,” she said.

Queen eShun indicated that the issue goes beyond paperwork. She warned that when a management team fails to grasp an artiste’s identity and aspirations, disputes can arise over sound, image and long term direction, ultimately derailing progress.

“If you don’t get a team that understands you, your brand, your style, your goal, your voice, your power, it will mess you up,” Queen eShun cautioned.
