Outspoken Ghanaian preacher Prophet Nicholas Osei, better known as Prophet Kumchacha, has offered a spiritual explanation for what he sees as the continued decline in Ghana’s film and football industries.

In a recent discussion on UTV’s United Showbiz program, Kumchacha claimed that both Ghana’s movie industry and the national football team, the Black Stars, are plagued by a powerful curse, one he believes lies at the heart of their ongoing struggles.

He dismissed the notion that the country’s difficulties in these sectors are due to a lack of talent or funding, instead pointing to a spiritual crisis that he says must be confronted head-on.

“There is a serious curse hanging over the movie industry and the Black Stars,” he said. “We need quality, not quantity. Even though Nigeria has a larger population than Ghana, that shouldn’t be the reason why our industry is lagging behind.”

Kumchacha partly blamed the so-called curse on what he described as toxic behaviour within Ghana’s creative space. He criticized the prevalence of jealousy, sabotage, and disunity, drawing comparisons with Nigeria’s entertainment scene, where he observed stronger support systems and camaraderie.

Illustrating his point, he referred to the criticism faced by actor and filmmaker Kojo Nkansah, popularly known as Lilwin, over his ambitious movie productions.

“When Lilwin brought out his movie A Country Called Ghana, some Ghanaians – including influential media personalities – spoke against it, instead of supporting him,” Kumchacha pointed out. “And now with President Traoré, it’s the same story. Meanwhile, Nigerians would have rallied behind him without hesitation.”

Concluding his remarks, the Prophet Kumchacha called on Ghanaians to undergo a collective change of heart. According to him, real progress in sports and entertainment will only come if the nation chooses unity over envy and support over cynicism.
