Founder of the now-defunct UT Bank, Prince Kofi Amoabeng, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for what he describes as exceptional humility and an unusually down-to-earth personality, qualities he says Ghana is fortunate to have in a public figure.

Speaking in an interview with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on December 10, 2025, Amoabeng stressed that such traits are rare assets in leadership.

Amoabeng’s endorsement stems from a long-standing personal relationship with Mahama dating back to his days as Vice President.

He explained that their friendship initially formed through interactions with the First Lady, Lordina Mahama, with whom he also had a close and informal rapport.

He recounted that although their contact became less frequent during UT Bank’s transition into a fully licensed bank between 2009 and 2010, a period he described as especially demanding, their relationship remained strong.

According to him, John Mahama’s character during that period reinforced his respect for him.

Amoabeng described the President as humane, approachable, and remarkably humble, someone who naturally connects with people from all walks of life.

“He’s been my friend; his wife, the First Lady Lordina Mahama, was my friend as well, and he also became my friend. We shared intimate moments, had drinks, and ate together when he was Vice President. At that time, I was building UT Bank, and we were not yet a bank,” Amoabeng recalled.

He added that humility should be central to public service, especially in a country striving for exemplary leadership.

Reflecting on Mahama’s personality, he stated, “We became a bank between 2009 and 2010, which kept me busy, making our friendship a bit distant. The President is incredibly down-to-earth, humane, and extremely humble; sometimes, he loses sight of the power he has. He interacts with everyone, and that is a rare quality we’re fortunate to have.”
