President John Dramani Mahama was in attendance as the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) marked the End of Year West Africa Social Activity (WASSA) 2025 at Burma Camp, honoring and promoting members who excelled in various sporting disciplines.

The award ceremony, held on January 23, 2026, recognised Able Seaman Class 2 (AB 2) Akutor Sarah of the Ghana Navy for her participation in an endurance swim to raise funds for children with special needs. She was promoted to the rank of Lead Seaman in recognition of her achievement.

Another honoree was Corporal Jerry Lartey, who won the WBA Africa Super Lightweight title during the ‘Showdown’ boxing event held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

He was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal for his accomplishment and for elevating the standards of the GAF as a member of the Ghana Army Boxing team.

In his remarks, President Mahama expressed gratitude to the award winners for their performances in their respective fields and encouraged them to continue making the Ghana Armed Forces proud.

“I wish to congratulate the award winners who were decorated today. Special recognition must be given to Leading Seaman Akutor Sarah Precious of the Ghana Navy for her remarkable 3-kilometre open water swim to raise awareness and funds for children with special needs. Her courage and selflessness exemplify the finest traditions of the Armed Forces. I congratulate her on her promotion.

“I also wish to congratulate Corporal Jerry Lartey for his outstanding victory in the WBA Africa Super Lightweight category, bringing honor to the Ghana Armed Forces and to Ghana. I commend him on his promotion. I personally was at the ringside. He really gave the Filipino a tough fight,” he said.

It is worth noting that the Minister of Finance and Acting Minister of Defence, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, was present to present awards and encouraged other service members to work harder for success.
