President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for the construction of an ultra-modern connecting concourse at the Kotoka International Airport.

The project will link Terminals Two and Three and includes the extension of Gate C1 at Terminal Three.

It forms part of the Terminal Two repurposing project, which is expected to enable the facility handle both domestic and international flights.

Key features of the project include five passenger boarding bridges, duty-free shops, commercial and retail spaces, a VIP lounge, and four business class lounges, among other modern passenger amenities.

The project is aimed at enhancing passenger experience by improving comfort and maintaining operational efficiency.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony in Accra yesterday, President Mahama indicated that the project would transform passenger movement within the airport by ensuring seamless, secure, and efficient connectivity between the two terminals.

He noted that it would also improve aircraft turnaround time, enhance passenger handling at transit points, and elevate overall service delivery.

According to the President, competition within the West African aviation sector was intensifying, making it necessary for Ghana to invest strategically.

He stated that if Ghana was to maintain its position as a preferred aviation hub, there was the need for deliberate investment, strategic planning, and efficient execution, supported by strong collaboration among government, regulators, operators, and private sector partners.

President Mahama further indicated that the vision for Ghana’s aviation industry extended beyond aeronautical operations, outlining additional projects in the pipeline.

He disclosed that plans were far advanced for the construction of a seven-storey, 2,000-bay multi-storey car park at Terminal Three, which would incorporate retail and dining areas, a sky-view lounge, a dual-concept airport hotel, conference rooms, and business spaces.

The President explained that the development would ease parking constraints, expand non-aeronautical revenue streams, and support the 24-hour economy policy, while creating jobs and stimulating economic activity.

He added that procurement processes were underway for the development of new regional airports in Bolgatanga, Wa, and Nsuatre to serve the Bono Region, while a technical committee had been established to work towards the establishment of a national carrier.

President Mahama stated that these projects would boost regional trade, tourism, and investment, and ensure inclusive development of the aviation sector.

He urged stakeholders to play their respective roles with diligence and urgency.

For her part, the Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, Mrs Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, described the concourse project as a significant step in the modernisation of infrastructure at the airport.

She noted that the airport currently serves 27 international airlines, two domestic airlines, and five scheduled cargo operators.
